Sisters, Oregon was the host for the 2012 Oregon Enduro Series race #4. This was the first time race organizers decided to use this small, western-style town located about 20 miles from Bend, OR as a base for this event. Since the nearby trail network is more compact than most this was to be a one-day-only series of stages to determine the winners. The race featured three stages:

Stage #1. This was the longest stage with a few high altitude creek crossings utilizing the Metolius/Windigo horse trail. It included loose downhills, a few small uphill sections and was rounded out with rock gardens aplenty.

Stage #2: Rocky with fast soft, drifty corners with a few sections with open vistas of the Sisters Mountains. It wasn't a difficult stage per-se but reports were that riders were starting to wear down at this point which caused some blown out corners and extracurricular banging of rocks with pedals, etc.

Stage #3: Started with open vistas with steep and rock-laden sections which transitioned to super-fast wide open fire road-type trails, also with plenty of rocks.

While the turnout for this event wasn't quite as large as some of the previous races there was definitely no shortage of talent and travel. The Pro Men's class has powerhouses Adam Craig (Bend), Aaron Bradford (Santa Cruz, CA), Josh Carlson (Vancouver, BC) and Duncan Riffle (Santa Barbara, CA ). The Women's class included past race winner Kelli Emmett (Colo. Springs), Lindsay Trimble (Burnaby, BC) and New Zealand's Rosara Joseph (listing Bend, OR as hometown).

New Zealand s cycling queen Rosara Joseph is not only a super-fast cyclist but also a lawyer. 1st place in Pro Women.

Although there were no reports of major injuries to riders there were plenty of flats, torn sidewalls and mechanicals to go around. Pro ride Matthew Slaven (Kona) had to use an empty gel packet to patch his tire in order to finish stage #2.

This was the story of the day. Deep dust and rocks made for a lot of flats and mechanicals.

The post-race gathering included a keg of beer and burritos for racers/volunteers along with a raffle of prizes from race sponsors. The crowd was serenaded by local rock band Strive Roots while waiting for timing to be completed and awards to begin. Finalizing the timing was a definite challenge to complete as race organizers had to travel into Sisters to get a wireless signal to upload times from the race iPods. As the planned 5pm awards ceremony was pushed beyond 6pm (and possibly later) the organizers decided to present the awards for this event at the final race at Mt. Hood in a few weeks. Final results were available online later Sunday night.

Madmax650- I work on the staff for the series. Planning for this event and the series as a whole started back in the winter. Sisters was one of the easiest venues to work and the Forest Service was happy to have the series there as we actually improved the trail. I think there were about 100-110 riders at this event. The smallest turnout of all the races so far in the series.

I was including racers, family, pets and groupies of the band in my estimate. Earlier races of this series had approx. 40 pro men.

killin me... may make a trip up for one of these races next year, all arizona has is endur-ance races, no endur-o.

Seems like AZ would have a GREAT bunch of terrain for an Enduro seies aye... You guys certainly have the elevation to do it so I'm curious as to WHY you guys don't have more races like this down there aye. Bummer... But yeah, the OR Enduro Series is a GREAT series and every race weekend is a fun party to boot. Problem with OR is that we only GET like 4 weeks a year to really enjoy the bounty of this state (sure we all ride year round, but it takes a dedicated rider to want to get out there in 40* weather when it's pissing down rain Smile

Mike, I'm glad you got some awesome photos! I was the dude sitting next to you trying not to spill coffee on myself in the truck heading out to do the timing. Great write up of the event as well.

Yea, we've got the terrain, but race organizing in AZ has seemed to basically be broken ever since the Cactus Cup died. Closest thing we have is the Whiskey Off road, which is only not a pure endurance race in that it has a real downhill section, or so i'm told.

Part of the problem seems to be the age imbalance in the state: guys who've been riding XC for 20-40 years tend to be snobbish about more aggressive riding.

Thanks Mike and Pinkbike for covering the event! Unfortunatly I couldnt make this one, but I have been to all the others this season and I love the format. I think its also great that a number of bike types work well for Enduro. I suspect 650B bikes will be very popular next year. 4-6 travel seems to be the right range to get the most of the experience. If anyone is interested I put together a little video from the first Oregon race in Bend that gives you a little idea of the bikes people and courses.

I have been racing the series and this one by far was the most phiscially challenging one! Pretty cool venue, the live band was awsome, had burritos, everyone was super cool expect the horseback riders. Bummer we didnt get to do podium do to difficulties with the timing but they are going to do it at the next one at Sandy Ridge/Mt. Hood. The series has been such a awsome experience and the racing format is perfect! The guys that put this on do a very good job and they are super friendly and love to hear your feedback! If you have been thinking about racing enduro do it!

Hey Guys, looks like a blast. I was able to spectate during the Hood River one and I was pretty stoked to see how the riders were charging it. I'm curious what bikes the guys were riding, I'm looking into a new bike and this Enduro thing looks fun.

This was a FUN weekend... I grew up riding and building in Sisters over the last 30+ years and it's great to see these races go off like they did, the trails are amazing and deserve to be raced on they'e that good. I could do without all the yuppy jags that were EVERYWHERE (just look for a Subaru wagon with any "microbrew" sticker on the back and it was 10/1 odds that there was a compete idiot behind the wheel...Sisters is a small town on an average weekend, add 100+ people who don't now how to drive and it's almost unbearable) but it was good to see the business in Sisters get some good money coming in aye. The Oregon Enduro Series is a GREAT race series IMO. Oregon's got some of the best riding on the N.American continent so it's about time we had a good nationaly recognized race series with top pro's coming out to ride.

Sisters is by far the happiest small towniest city I've ever been to. Slicks barbeque has the best brisket in the world also. Just thought everyone should know.

How is this compared to the Euro enduro? Does Oregon have it nailed? I am applying to schools out there. Maybe I'll get in one of these pictures some day.

I like the grass roots look this has to it. How long is an event like this planned ahead of time? And you mentioned about 200 riders? sweet pictures, too

Looks like a fair share of 29'ers in those pictures. Is that the wheel size of choice for this kind of series?

There are litteraly built, world-class trails EVERYWHERE with the exception of the deep SE corner of the state and even then there are still amazing trails to ride, just not built/maintained stuff. Come on out man, you'll be hooked and neve want to ove back Wink
